CityLibraries received a $1,500 grant for Adult Learners Week to run the project and an information session was held on Friday, 14th August 2009 at CityLibraries Thuringowa Central. Guest speaker Winsome Denyer, from ABC Local Radio gave a talk to inspire potential participants to get involved and write their stories, ready for the workshops in September.
We encouraged people to think about their memories of school, home, work, industry, sport, leisure, events, people, cyclones, floods, and the changing face of Townsville; including The Strand, Flinders Street, and the outer suburbs - as the basis for their stories.
It was not essential that people were computer literate, as library staff were on hand during the workshops to assist with typing of stories and scanning of photos.
We anticipate that as we build on the Looking back... Memories of Townsville wiki - we will be creating an ongoing resource for the local community to access information about Townsville's heritage. On each story page, links to relevant resources within the Local Collection and CityLibraries catalogue will assist users to find further information.
